Roberto Donadoni has agreed to stay in charge of the Italian national team until the World Cup in 2010. Talks to sign the two-year deal had been due to take place after the Euro 2008 Championships, but repeated rumours and news articles by various news agencies encouraged the Italian FA to get everything in place now, rather than risk further disruption.

Roberto Donadoni and Fabio Cannavaro

The Italian FA have insisted on a “get-out” clause in Roberto’s contract – if they fail to qualify from the group stages in Euro 2008 then they reserve the right to cancel the deal. With Italy in what is undoubtedly the toughest group against Netherlands, Romania and France, Donadoni will have a look of relief on his face come 17th June if after playing France they are still in the tournament.

Donadoni has already suffered one blow, with his captain Fabio Cannavaro being ruled out of the tournament. Gianluigi Buffon takes over the captains armband.

Italy’s other fixtures include the Netherlands on 9th June and Romania on 13th June.

1) Jose Mourinho is now the manager of Inter after Roberto Mancini got the boot.  It is very ironic how Mancini might take over the Chelsea managerial position after Avram Grant got the boot.  Mourinho used to be the Chelsea manager until he was fired.  It would be perfect if Grant got the Lazio position, Macini’s former.

2) Fabio Cannavaro suffered a very serious ankle injury and is now out of the entire Euro 2008.  A huge blow to the Italy side.  While Italy has many talented defenders, Cannavaro will certainly be missed.

3) Patrick Vieira will miss the first match of the Euro 2008.  The French side will certainly miss their captain for the first match however, they should be able to manage as they have a talented midfield.

Poor Wayne. He worked hard but didn't have any service. Shocked that United went out, but its all they deserved.

hey jason, nice article, and definitely something to think about. It is true that there is a huge gulf between say club soccer, high school soccer, and college level soccer. You know that I want to play at the NCAA level, but I do understand that, realistically, I'm just not
