Champs_Lge_230 Despite some great show being put up and brave efforts being made, Arsenal couldn’t overpower Barcelona who marched forward to be in the Champions League quarterfinals. The last victory with a 3-1 score and an aggregate 4-3, led the way for the final move to the quarterfinals for Barcelona.

Arsenal tried hard and appeared to be heading towards the right direction, however, somehow failed in their attempt. Barcelona, on the other hand, controlled much of the game and created quite a few chances on goal in the first half. Finally Messi opened the scorecard in the third minute of injury time. The first goal boosted the confidence of the Barcelona side.

Barcelona kicks off Champions League campaign with a win , After the initial jolt of conceding a goal against Panathinaikos, Barcelona finally gave their fans something to cheer about as they kicked off their Champions League with an exciting win at Camp Nou. The change in the fortune came about as Messi managed to hit the net twice before half time and was ably supported by David Villa. The wonderful performance by the two stars meant that Barcelona had already taken an unassailable lead of 3-1 over their rivals before the half time.

Argentina wins over world champions Spain in a friendly match Argentina may not be the world champion but no one can take away the fact that it is one of the classiest team in the world. Argentina proved it one more time it is a great side, as they thwarted the world champion, Spain 4-1 in a friendly match played in Buenos Aires. Goals from Lionel Messi, Carlos Tévez , Gonzalo Higuaín and Sergio Agüero, assisted by some sloppy work by Pepe Reina made sure that world champions weren’t invincible. After the World cup debacle, this should do a world of good to the Argentine side. This will give them the much needed morale booster as they gear up for the next season.

Bayern 1Bayern Munich stormed into the finals of the Champions League as they defeated Olympique Lyon 3-0 in a crucial encounter on Tuesday. Ivica Olic, the Croatian striker looked in great form as he scored three goals to put the match out of their rivals reach. The victory means that the German side would be playing their first Champions League final in almost nine years.

Ivica’s hat-trick is the second such instance when a player has managed to score three goals in a semifinal after Alessandro Del Piero did it for Juventus in 1988 against Monaco. Olic was ecstatic at the outcome of the match and confessed that he did not expect the match to be such a cakewalk for his team. Bayern would now face the winners of the match between Inter Milan and Barcelona in the final that is going to be held at the Bernabeu on May 22.

Bayern Munich managed to pull off a major upset when they knocked Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League. Alex Ferguson, the manager of the English team was absolutely lost for words in the presentation that followed the match. He could not come up with any genuine reason for his team’s dismal performance. He thought that the false protest from the Germans which led to Rafael’s send off was the turning point of the match.

The first leg semi-final of the Champions League proved to be a thrilling encounter between Inter Milan and Barcelona. The match that took place on Tuesday saw Inter Milan emerge victorious as the match finished with a score of 3-1 in their favor. uefa_logo The draw for the play-off rounds was conducted by UEFA last week for the Champions League and Europa League. FC Timisoara will play against Vfb Stuttgart in the champions League. Although Timisoara has the likes of Winston Parks, the Die Schwaben seem the favorites to advance to the group stage in Champions League where they are expected to join Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich. Rothosen are certain of progressing to the next round where they will be joined by Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen. Hertaha Berlin will have to get the better of Denmark’s brondby IF if they are to make it to the group stages of the Europa League.
