Rafael Benitez  Inter Milan

After a disappointing season with Liverpool, Rafael Benitez has been appointed as the new coach of the European champions, Inter Milan. Benitez confirmed that he has signed a two year deal with the double winners of the last season. Benitez will take over from the dynamic Jose Mourinho, who drove his side to win the European league along with the Serie A title. For Benitez, it will be a challenge to fill his shoes and fact that he hasn’t had a great season with Liverpool might put some pressure on him.

Brazil’s World Cup hopes are largely dependent on Kaka’s form. The Real Madrid superstar is expected to play a major role in Brazil’s campaign this year in South Africa. Although a lot depends on him, Kaka himself has a few things to worry about. He has been largely affected by injuries and this could be a real problem for the playmaker. However, Kaka is confident that he will recover in time and play a big role in this year’s World Cup.

Mourinho replaces Manuel Pellegrini in the Madrid hotseat

After a treble with Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho has decided to move to Real Madrid as their new coach for the coming season. The formalities were completed after the two sides agreed upon compensation package for the  move. Presidents of the two clubs met in Milan last Friday to finalize the deal. Mourinho will take over from Manuel Pellegrini, who was released of his duties after a disappointing season with Madrid failing to win a single title.

Barcelona retains La Liga title again

In a record breaking performance, Barcelona has once again been crowned as the La Liga champions of Spain. They edged their ace rivals Real Madrid to win the Spanish league by beating Valladolid 4-0 during their last match of the season. Barcelona recorded 99 points during the season and this is an all time record. Putting behind their Champions league failure they showed tremendous character to win the league title.

Atletico Madrid wins Europa trophy

Diego Forlan’s second goal in extra time stopped Fulham from winning a major trophy for the first time in their history. To the heartbreak of millions of Fulham fans, Atletico Madrid defeated them 2-1 to lift the Europa League title. Spurred a superb performance by Deigo Forlan, who scored both the goals, Madrid executed a clinical display of football and held on to their nerves to score the winner in extra time.

Barry ruled out for four weeks with injury England’s World Cup bid suffered a major blow when ace midfielder Gareth Barry, playing for Manchester City was injured during a crucial English Premiership league match against Tottenham, which City lost by a solitary goal and also missed out from the opportunity of playing in next years champions league. Barry injured his ankle during the game and will be out of action for at least four weeks.

Bayern 1Bayern Munich stormed into the finals of the Champions League as they defeated Olympique Lyon 3-0 in a crucial encounter on Tuesday. Ivica Olic, the Croatian striker looked in great form as he scored three goals to put the match out of their rivals reach. The victory means that the German side would be playing their first Champions League final in almost nine years.

Ivica’s hat-trick is the second such instance when a player has managed to score three goals in a semifinal after Alessandro Del Piero did it for Juventus in 1988 against Monaco. Olic was ecstatic at the outcome of the match and confessed that he did not expect the match to be such a cakewalk for his team. Bayern would now face the winners of the match between Inter Milan and Barcelona in the final that is going to be held at the Bernabeu on May 22.

Bayern Munich managed to pull off a major upset when they knocked Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League. Alex Ferguson, the manager of the English team was absolutely lost for words in the presentation that followed the match. He could not come up with any genuine reason for his team’s dismal performance. He thought that the false protest from the Germans which led to Rafael’s send off was the turning point of the match.

Bojan Krkic, Yaya Toure and Pedro fired a goal each to ensure their team had an easy walk on the park. Barcelona had ensured a three point table top lead by defeating Real Madrid 2-0 on Saturday and their win against Deportivo Coruna means they now stand six points clear of the next best team in the La Liga table.

The first leg semi-final of the Champions League proved to be a thrilling encounter between Inter Milan and Barcelona. The match that took place on Tuesday saw Inter Milan emerge victorious as the match finished with a score of 3-1 in their favor. Pedro had given Barcelona a great start but his good work was soon spoiled by Wesley Sneijder, Diego Milito and Maicon of Inter Milan as Barcelona conceded their first two- goal margin loss under their manager Pep Guardiola.
