Robinho Update

While I was away, a very big move occurred, Robinho moved from Real Madrid to Man City on the last day of the Summer Transfer Window.  The fee for Robinho was 42.5 million euro, netting ‘binho a very nice, 160,000 pounds a week.

The move to the Premiership should be a good one for Robinho.  The strength of Spanish soccer and La Liga is comparable to the Premier League in that they both have a bevy of powerhouses and play very competitive soccer. Also, Robinho will be among friends in Brazil National Team teammates, Jo and Elano.

Right before the transfer was made official, Real President, Ramon Calderon, made some very interesting comments.  He stated, that he would rather end Robinho’s career than see him play for Real.  There was speculation all summer long that a Robinho move was in the works and it was only a matter of time before ‘Binho found himself off of Real.

Finally, we should look at Man City’s outlook for this season.  To be quite honest, the powers of the Premiership will be in front, Man U, Arsenal, and Liverpool, but look for Man City to make a run at a higher place than last season.  They also have a good future ahead of them in a new striker, Robinho and summer acquiree Gio Dos Santos.

Passed Over Spotlight: College Club Soccer

"Passed Over" Spotlight

After a month long vacation from writing, I am coming back with a new category: The Passed Over Spotlight.  In this category I will write solely about soccer events, players, or occurrences that are simply passed over.  Most of these events are actually big events and should be heard of.

This week’s Passed Over Spotlight will look at College Club Soccer.  Many people think of college sports as the one’s that are sponsored and paid for by the school.  However, many schools are unable to field teams in all of the major sports.  For instance, soccer is sometimes passed over in order to cut costs.  Or in other cases, there are not enough women’s sports teams, so a men’s team is cut in order to field a women’s team.

The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association is very similar to the NCAA, NAIA, and NSCAA.  NIRSA is the governing body for collegiate club sports.  For soccer, the NIRSA currently has two major tournaments.  In california, the Aztec Cup is held every year and many collegiate club teams make the trip to San Diego, CA.  The National Cup is held every in a different location.  This year the National Cup will be held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

College Club soccer is often looked over because of NCAA teams that are in the spotlight in the soccer world.  However, most of the players on club soccer teams could have played NCAA soccer.  Teams that are in the Elite 8 have players that can be Division 1 starters.  For whatever reason, maybe money or education, players choose to attend a college that do not have NCAA, NAIA, or NSCAA teams.  Whatever this reason maybe, College Club Soccer deserves to be looked at a little bit more.  Finally, without college club soccer, the likes of Shalrie Joseph and Justin Braun might not be known or heard of.

La Liga,Premiership,Soccer Central

Well I’m back after about a week’s hiatus however I have a lot more updates as today is an exciting day.  The English Premier League four horses are all in Champion’s League action tonight.  Despite all that, let us move on.

  • Carlos Cuellar has moved from Rangers to Aston Villa.  The Spanish Center Back is on the move after only one year with the Scottish League.
  • Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas will miss at least the first 2 EPL matches with an injury.
  • There has been a lot of rumors going around surrounding Barcelona and Samuel Eto’o.  One team in Europe made a rather bold statement claiming that they had inked the Barcelona forward.  Obviously, that has turned into nothing.  As it stands now, Coach Pep Guardiola has announced that he will remain with Barca.
  • Robinho has recently told Real Madrid that he will only move to Chelsea with a new deal set in place before any transfer takes place.  This obviously means that a new deal, will mean new money.  I think a change of scenery will help Robinho along and hopefully if he is moved, he will find his place with the Blues.
  • Valencia rejected a bid from Man U for midfielder David Silva.  Valencia did not finish in the top this season in La Liga much to the surprise of many given the amount of talent they have.

Living The Life: Two Points on Being A Pro

I recently heard and read about two things that made me think about being a professional. Both of these things sparked my thoughts and I decided to turn that into an article.

During the MLS All-Star Game, a flurry of MLS and Adidas sponsored commercials were passed. All of them showed the same thing, the one thing that I have the most passion for: Youth Development. Some featured David Beckham kicking around with some kids from an island off of England and others showing other MLS stars coaching kids. It was one simple statement that one player made that is one key point today. “Its a fun life, but you have to earn it.” He is talking about being a pro and the hard work it takes to simply earn a spot. After reviewing a California State College’s 3-week workout/training program, I was amazed at the level of condition that college athletes are in. The next level’s training program would surely blow my mind away. It is my personal opinion that our youth need to have the aforementioned simple statement drilled into their heads over and over again. Too many youth kids get by on talent alone and never even make it to college(which is sad) because they never develop the work ethic that is required at the next level.

The next level’s work ethic totally blows my mind away. I can not say for certain but I do know that Mexican clubs train 2-3 times a day with very few days off. Our current youth movement practices 2-3 times a week. Colleges go everyday, 1 time, with the occasional 2-a days. So, their is a dramatic progression on the scale, like taking step by step then, ten steps at one time. I think today’s youth needs to practice at a higher level or more times a week. They also need to know what it takes to get to the next level. My dream is for the next generation of U.S. soccer is a World Cup Championship, but with that dream comes the realization that much hard work is needed.

My next point is from an article that I recently read about Joey Barton. Barton played for Man City and is now with Newcastle United. He has been in a bit of trouble to say the least. But I think the media have hyped his story, not to say that a trip to prison is not big news. Joey Barton is a perfect example for my main point. That is, living the life is not all that is hyped up to be. In society, common folk rarely see celebrities from sports, film, or glamor outside in the normal world. The normal world being: the movie theatre, normal shopping malls, and many other “common folk” gatherings. The reason is a perfectly good one, these people would literally be killed by the amount of people hounding them for their attention. So, some of Barton’s incidents can be forgiven. Another part of being a pro is the amount of pressure to perform and to be literally owned. Many famous pros having commented on what goes on behind the scenes. Players playing hurt or on an extreme amount of pain medication. Or pressure from management to perform. I think on the outside, it looks like the perfect life, as easy as “getting on your favorite ride at Disney World and not getting off for a long time.” My second point: We can easily criticize on the outside, but in the end, do people come to your job, harass you, publish hundreds of stories on your life, and then throw you in jail for simply fighting back?

From start to finish, my two comments today are about the start of soccer in youth, to the end with being a professional.

Rumors

As of late, nothing big has been cemented into any teams lineup but there have been quite a few rumors going around. Here are just a few:

  • Roma has an apparent interest in Chelsea’s Malouda. I have previously stated that the Blue’s midfield is rather stocked to say the least, especially with the addition of Deco.
  • Cesc Fabregas is interested in a Real Madrid move but not at the moment. So, it is safe to say that one day he will be donned in a Madrid jersey. But right now, he is staying with the Gunners.
  • Michael Ballack has announced his retirement plan that details his intentions to stay at Stamford Bridge for the rest of his career. This is good news for the Blues as there have been many rumors flying around. Some saying that he would be moving, others saying that he might stay, and finally some saying that he prefers a return to Germany.
  • Ballack’s teammate, Didier Drogba will make a decision on whether he will stay with Chelsea or move on.
  • Tottenham striker Berbatov is in the same boat as Drogba. Is he going to stay or is he going to go? Time will tell.
  • Everton has interest in Sporting Lisbon‘s Joao Mountinho, and it is reported to be mutual. However, Sporting recently rejected Everton’s bid. Perhaps Joao is in their future plans or the bid was too low. I personally think a move to the premiership would be good for Joao.

It seems Chelsea has their eyes set on a Robinho signing who may receive Peter Kenyon‘s last check for the summer. Kenyon the Chief Executive of Chelsea has been quoted as saying that he would like to sign the Brazilian striker as his last signing of this transfer window. Such a move would really add depths to the already bolstering Chelsea Striker Ranks. The Blues already have Andriy Shevchenko, Didier Drogba, Claudio Pizzaro, and Nicolas Anelka. What a list to choose from.

Other Updates:

  • Roma has made an opening bid for Fiorentina’s Adrian Mutu.
  • The Mafia have reportedly tried to buy Lazio.
  • French national and former Chelsea player Makalele has joined Paris-Saint German.
  • Diego has defied his club Werder Bremer and has joined Brazil to play in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Life After Ronaldinho: A New Barcelona

By Jason | July 23, 2008 7:57 am |

La Liga,Soccer Central

On 19 July 2003, Barcelona acquired Ronaldinho from Paris Saint German beating out Manchester United. An interesting fact to note is that Barca had their sights set on David Beckham who signed with rivals, Real Madrid. After that he began an amazing career with many ups as well as downs. In 145 games/ appearances he amassed 70 goals. The gifted play maker elevated the game of Barca as well as his own. Among his many other awards, he has been named the FIFA Player of the Year, twice in 2004 and 2005.

When a person thought about Barcelona, Ronaldinho was the first player that came to mind. Maybe captain, Carlos Puyol, entered some people’s minds however the fantastic play maker is hard to resist. When Barca started signing and selling players, Ronaldinho’s name was attached to almost all the rumors out there. Now that he is truly gone, a new Barcelona must find a replacement or change the way that they play. Barcelona has brought in many talented players that some could say are ‘dinho’s replacements. However, are these players future World Players of the Year? I think these players have some big shoes to fill. Here are the possible replacements:

  • Xavi
  • Iniesta
  • Yaya Toure
  • Martin Caceres
  • Marc Crosas
  • Aliksandr Hleb
  • Seydou Keita

Out of the list above, 3 players are incumbents and 4 are new comers. The list is a very solid one and any manager would love to fill an attacking midfield position with one of them.

In the end, I question a lot of the decisions made this season. The biggest decision I would have to criticize is Gio Dos Santos‘ departure. By selling him, Barca sold off a potential replacement for ‘dinho. I thought at such a young age, Gio has shown immense talent and has truly proved himself on the field. Another decisions that is arguable, is letting Deco walk. While his sights were set on a return with Chelsea coach Felipe Scolari, he has played with Barca for four years, so he surely does have something in him for the Catalan side. Alas, that obviously did not change his decision. So Now that the Ronaldinho era for Barca has ended, we shall see a new, revamped side. One that does not need a single play-maker but relies on many different play-makers. I am very hopeful for both parties and wish the very best for my two favorites in Europe, Barcelona and AC Milan. Farwell ‘dinho and thanks for the memories.

Latest Rumblings

Today’s Story: A highlight for today is not anything real big but big enough. Before signing with Chelsea, Deco waved off very lucrative bids from the MLS and Saudi Arabia. It seems that the MLS is getting more and more serious about bringing in talent to the States. This is good news. He mentions that many teams offered him the money too. Which means that more than one team is getting into the future of American soccer. I also respect Deco’s decision to play for love of the game and not money.

Rumble:

  • Ronaldo is staying at United after all. Maybe it was the words of Gordon Banks and Pele that made him re-think his decision or maybe it was Man U’s decision to keep him. Who knows? The only bit of news is, as of right now, Cristiano Ronaldo is still a red.
  • Carlos Villanueva has joined the Premiership side Blackburn. The Chilean international looks to improve the Blackburn midfield this season.
  • Frank Lampard has finally come to his decision: He wants a move to Inter. The only thing blocking him is Chelsea. Lampard has only a year left on his contract and since Chelsea has made no publicly known moves to extend him, he has looked elsewhere. Also, he is highly coveted by his old boss, Jose Mourinho.
  • There are many reports out that are stating that Kaka would like to leave AC and join Chelsea. Whether these reports are true or not, Milan has said that Kaka is not for sale. Period.

Ronaldinho To AC!

Serie A,Soccer Central

The Ronaldinho era in the Camp Nou has come to an end. Barca’s play-maker will now be playing at the San Siro. This is a very happy moment for me and for all fans of AC!

The Low-Down:

  • Ronaldinho and Barca agree to send him to AC just a day after announcing that some form of an arrangement would occur 72 hours from then.
  • Ronaldinho agrees to a 3 year contract that will end on 30 June 2011. He will be 31 when the current contract ends.
  • AC Milan agree to pay 20 million Euro in exchange for ‘dinho and his services.

Analysis:

Ronaldinho is now the eighth new comer to join Milan. They have been really busy and they should be. While they are one of the top teams of the Serie A, they finished in 5th place. That means that they will not be playing in the Champion’s League this year, instead they will compete for the UEFA Cup. All in all, not bad, but for a premier club like this, the best is expected of them.

‘dinho should fit in nicely with a team that already has quite a few Brazilians. Digao, Kaka, Dida, Emerson, and the young Alexandre Pato will now be his teammates, so adjusting will not be that hard. Also, Gianluca Zambrotta came over on a free transfer. He has played in the spotlight of the Camp Nou and being at the top of La Liga, so the San Siro should not be any different. I think he will do very well here.

AC Milan’s Other Additions:

  • Matheu Flamini
  • Gianluca Zambrotta
  • Luca Antonini
  • Christian Abbiati
  • Marco Borriello
  • Ignazio Abate
  • Marco Storari

A fine pick up for the Rossoneri and something that I will really look forward to.

Ronaldinho Update

So it seems that Ronaldinho and Barca have come to an intersection about him staying or leaving. They both have 72 hours to decide what to do. If no agreement is reached, then ‘dinho will begin training with the team. I personally like Ronaldinho, as he is a valuable asset to any team. The good thing with the Barca situation is that there is a new coach and they have brought in a lot of new faces. Already last year’s side has been shaken up with additions and subtractions.

Plus(4):

  • Seydou Keita
  • Gerard Pique
  • Martin Caceres
  • Dani Alves

Minus(7):

  • Edmilson
  • Zambrotta
  • Gio Dos Santos
  • Thuram
  • Ezquerro
  • Deco
  • Eto’o

A possible reason for a ‘dinho departure could be team chemistry. Since Ronaldinho has caused so much media commotion and so on and so forth. One might say that the team chemistry might decrease however, since so many have left and been replaced, this probably won’t be an issue caused by ‘dinho. Also, with the departure of Gio Dos Santos, who would be ‘dinho’s replacement? I can not say what Pep Guardiola and company will do with Ronaldinho. But I can speculate on their decision come 72 hours from the start of the deadline.

hey jason, nice article, and definitely something to think about. It is true that there is a huge gulf between say club soccer, high school soccer, and college level soccer. You know that I want to play at the NCAA level, but I do understand that, realistically, I'm just not
