Premier league shaping up

The first weekend of the Premier League lived up to its reputation of producing some great games and the Big Four produced some intrigue and kept the speculations alive. The most startling outcome of the weekend was a 6-1 thrashing received by Everton at the hands of Arsenal at Goodison park. The Arsenal team played beautifully and at no point seemed to be troubled by the Everton side that had finished at fifth position in the last season of the Premier League. Although Arsenal is known to face problems later in the season, they could not have hoped for a better start.

davidmoyesarmsfolded_275x155 David Moyes, manager of the Everton team looked really out of sorts at Turf Moor on Sunday. Speculations are that it was due to the consecutive defeats that Everton has suffered in the beginning of the Premier League matches. The manger has the onus to rebuild his team after Everton accepted the Manchester City’s offer for Lescott. After Wayne Rooney’s sale to Man U, the Lscott deal is being considered as the most lucrative deal for Everton making Lescott the costliest British defender.

Manchester City has spent a whopping amount of money in signing star players like Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa. The funding has been done by their owners based in Abu Dhabi. David Taylor who is the general secretary of UEFA is of the opinion that it would be very dangerous for the Premier League clubs to match the Manchester City financially. But, he also feels that Real Madrid and Eastland club are close to matching City financially. However, the positions can change very quickly, suggested Taylor giving the example of Leeds United who play in League One now had to do away with Premier League in 2004 due to financial constraints. There have been similar stories from some major clubs as well very recently.

The proficiency of Manchester United, the most dominating domestic team, has been exposed during final of Champions League. With the team winning the Premier League successively for the third time, they equaled the record of 18 league titles with Liverpool. While Chelsea bagged the third position, Arsenal maintained the 4th position. Still being one of the best teams in the region, Manchester United has proved itself again by winning third successive league title.

The Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year Award had eight footballers in the voting list. The team’s competency can be judged from the multiple nominations. Out of these 8 sportsmen, unbelievably six are from Manchester United team. The six lucky players responsible for making the team reach heights are Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney. Though Steven Gerrard from Liverpool bagged the first prize, thanks to split voting.

La Liga,Premiership,Soccer Central

Well I’m back after about a week’s hiatus however I have a lot more updates as today is an exciting day.  The English Premier League four horses are all in Champion’s League action tonight.  Despite all that, let us move on.

  • Carlos Cuellar has moved from Rangers to Aston Villa.  The Spanish Center Back is on the move after only one year with the Scottish League.
  • Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas will miss at least the first 2 EPL matches with an injury.
  • There has been a lot of rumors going around surrounding Barcelona and Samuel Eto’o.  One team in Europe made a rather bold statement claiming that they had inked the Barcelona forward.  Obviously, that has turned into nothing.  As it stands now, Coach Pep Guardiola has announced that he will remain with Barca.
  • Robinho has recently told Real Madrid that he will only move to Chelsea with a new deal set in place before any transfer takes place.  This obviously means that a new deal, will mean new money.  I think a change of scenery will help Robinho along and hopefully if he is moved, he will find his place with the Blues.
  • Valencia rejected a bid from Man U for midfielder David Silva.  Valencia did not finish in the top this season in La Liga much to the surprise of many given the amount of talent they have.

Today’s Story: A highlight for today is not anything real big but big enough. Before signing with Chelsea, Deco waved off very lucrative bids from the MLS and Saudi Arabia. It seems that the MLS is getting more and more serious about bringing in talent to the States. This is good news. He mentions that many teams offered him the money too. Which means that more than one team is getting into the future of American soccer. I also respect Deco’s decision to play for love of the game and not money.

Rumble:

  • Ronaldo is staying at United after all. Maybe it was the words of Gordon Banks and Pele that made him re-think his decision or maybe it was Man U’s decision to keep him. Who knows? The only bit of news is, as of right now, Cristiano Ronaldo is still a red.
  • Carlos Villanueva has joined the Premiership side Blackburn. The Chilean international looks to improve the Blackburn midfield this season.
  • Frank Lampard has finally come to his decision: He wants a move to Inter. The only thing blocking him is Chelsea. Lampard has only a year left on his contract and since Chelsea has made no publicly known moves to extend him, he has looked elsewhere. Also, he is highly coveted by his old boss, Jose Mourinho.
  • There are many reports out that are stating that Kaka would like to leave AC and join Chelsea. Whether these reports are true or not, Milan has said that Kaka is not for sale. Period.

hey jason, nice article, and definitely something to think about. It is true that there is a huge gulf between say club soccer, high school soccer, and college level soccer. You know that I want to play at the NCAA level, but I do understand that, realistically, I'm just not
