Putting aside the controversy surrounding his personal life, John Terry, the Chelsea captain ensured that his team went to the number one position in the Premier League by scoring the final goal in the team’s victory at Burnley which finished with a score line of 2-1. Terry’s position as the captain of the English team was being questioned following the publications in the newspaper about his alleged fling with Wayne Bridge. However, his header which came just eight minutes before the final whistle silenced all his critics.

Real Madrid crashed to defeat in Athletic Club Bilbao

Real Madrid which is undoubtedly the richest football team in the world suffered their third defeat of the season when they lost 1-0 to Athletic Club Bilbao in San Mames stadium. Unlike the multi-million Euro team, the Athletics does not have the star power and have also spent just 2 million Euros this season. Majority of the members of the Athletic team are from the Basque district which also explains their wonderful relationship with the fans.

Soccer stars play match to raise funds for Haiti

The recent earthquake in Haiti resulted in the death of over 200,000 people and has also rendered more than three million people homeless. It has led to a nightmarish situation in the poorest country of the Western Hemisphere. In order to lend a helping hand to the victims of this disaster over 80 soccer greats of all times from around 17 countries played a charity match in Lisbon. The match was played at Luz stadium with tickets costing 10 euros each.

Togo Disqualified from the African Cup of Nations

The unfortunate attack on the convoy of Togo’s team on Friday has led to the disqualification of the national football team from the African Cup of Nations. The deadly attack happened in Cabinda. The assistant coach and the media officer of the team were killed and Kodjovi “Dodji” Obilale, the goalkeeper of the team was gravely injured.

Manchester United knocked out of FA Cup

Sunday saw one of the biggest upsets of the FA Cup when Leeds knocked Manchester United out of the competition. Leeds thanks to the 19th minute goal by Jermaine Beckford won their first game at the Old Trafford after 1981. No other team had been able to knock Manchester United out of the third round apart from Bournemouth who achieved the feat in 1984. Alex Ferguson took charge of the Manchester United in 1986 and since then the club has been able to get their hands on the trophy on as many as five occasions and hold a record 11 FA Cup triumphs overall.

The FIFA World Player of the Year Award for this year went to the Barcelona star Lionel Messi. The award is one of the many feathers in the cap which the star player has added to his illustrious career. The award ceremony was a gala event and was held in Zurich. Messi received the prestigious award outdistancing Christiano Ronaldo and Kaka who received the awards on the previous two occasions. He also was head and shoulders above his teammates Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta in voting among captains and coaches of the national team.

David Beckham dreaming of a return to Manchester United

David Beckham who left the Manchester United in 2003 for Real Madrid is dreaming of making a return to his old club. Beckham has made it clear that he would like to play at Old Trafford before the draw for the knockout stages of Champions League takes place. There is a good probability that Manchester United get paired with AC Milan after the draw. Beckham is set for a second loan spell and is expected to return to Milan in January and there is a good chance that English champions may face Manchester United in the succeeding month.

The loss of striker Robin Van Persie has really been a disaster as far as the Arsenal team is concerned. The Dutch striker who is head and shoulder over the other strikers in the team has really left his club looking out desperately for different options. Although, Arsenal has Eduardo who is a brilliant player, the fact is that he has not been performing up to his standards following his injury. Then there is the Mexican ace Carlos Vela who unfortunately has not been given enough chances to prove his mettle in the Premier League.

France miss out on World Cup seedings

The Winner of the World Cup 1998 and also the finalists in 2006, France team is not among the top eight seeded teams for the draw that was held this Friday. The news was announced by FIFA and Jerome Valcke when  its general secretary made it clear at a news conference that it was due to the world rankings that France missed out a place and not because of the controversy that has been surrounding the side since the infamous handball goal against Ireland.
