US aiming to create history The United States Men’s national team is all set to create history in the on-going Confederation Cup when they take on Spain, which is ranked as the world’s number one in the semifinals. Being in a group which had Brazil and Italy, the U.S. team has certainly managed to surprise quite a few people. However, it would be a tough test for them as they play against Spain who have ousted 15 teams in a row and have not been defeated for as many as 35 matches.

The last meeting of the two teams was in U.S. where Spain won 1-0. The U.S. team owes its success to Bob Bradley who has certainly transformed the entire team. Although the Confederations Cup semifinal is important, U.S. team must be relishing the thought of making it to the ultimate level-the World cup.

The confederation Cup is surely proving a great launching pad for the United States team before the 2010 World Cup. The team is almost certain to play two more games depending on the result against Spain for either 1st or 3rd place. The Spain team looks in great form and in the right frame of mind. They defeated New Zealand by 5-0 in their opener and easily came over Iraq and South Africa to reach the semis.

The United States team therefore has to pull up its socks and come up with something very special in order to keep their hopes alive in this tournament. This is the best chance for the team to create history.

franckribery

Rumour is that even though French playmaker Franck Ribery has a contract with the club Bayern Munich, but he is still linked with many major European clubs. The frontrunner among all other clubs is the Real Madrid which is willing to take the player at any cost. Bayern Munich’s president is quite annoyed with the rumours arising one after another and says that there are only two solutions to all these reports. First one being the release of player by the club and second one is that Franck Ribery extends the contract so that there are no chances of transfer. Point to be noted here is that his contract is valid till 2011.

Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid club, who has been elected shortly, expressed his willingness to sign Ribery again in an interview to L’Equip. “It would be a huge satisfaction to have Ribery with us as soon as next season,” Perez said. However he said that he will first talk to his club before any deal. He wanted to tell them that Ribery is their target and wanted to discuss the possibilities of him being transferred to Real Madrid.

SPL title race finally came to an end with Rangers beating up their arch rivals Celtic. An unbelievable 3-0 win at the end for Rangers against current champions Celtic came as a surprise for everybody. The first victory in four years was incredible. The winning team at one point of time was considered highly pedestrian as they once were 7 points behind their old firm rivals. Striker Kris Boyd came out with striking colours by being the SPL top scorer with his 31 league goals. Even though the manager Walter Smith dropped keeper Allen McGregor and long-serving captain Barry Ferguson, the luck favoured Ranger’s.
With their remarkable win over the other teams, Rangers has created a niche for themselves in the Champions League. Not only this, the club’s exhausted funds will also see a boost with 6 games in group stages in their stride. They will also be able to eliminate the memory of their early exit in Lithuanian minnows FBK Kaunas.

The proficiency of Manchester United, the most dominating domestic team, has been exposed during final of Champions League. With the team winning the Premier League successively for the third time, they equaled the record of 18 league titles with Liverpool. While Chelsea bagged the third position, Arsenal maintained the 4th position. Still being one of the best teams in the region, Manchester United has proved itself again by winning third successive league title.

The Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year Award had eight footballers in the voting list. The team’s competency can be judged from the multiple nominations. Out of these 8 sportsmen, unbelievably six are from Manchester United team. The six lucky players responsible for making the team reach heights are Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney. Though Steven Gerrard from Liverpool bagged the first prize, thanks to split voting.

Chelsea Likely To Face Disciplinary Action The Champions league witnessed match between Chelsea and Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. UEFA has received delegate’s and referee’s report. Not only this, they are also in the process of collecting additional evidence so that they can decide on the disciplinary action against Chelsea. The result will be declared next week. While the London club faces the charge of being unable to control its players, the four Chelsea players are charged individually for pestering Norwegian referee Tom Henning Overbo and for comments post match.

Player Diddier Drogba argued with the referee in tunnel and on the pitch. He is likely to face the sternest action. When fourth penalty appeal was turned down by the referee, Michael Ballack ran 40 yards to confront with him. He was given a yellow card for the same. Skipper John Terry criticized Overbo and will be charged for this. The fourth player is Chelsea full-back José Bosingwa. He is convicted of calling the referee a thief who was bought. Jose has no doubt apologized for commenting like this.

The controlling body might ban Drogba to play some matches. However, they will be taking video evidences for their decision. Referee Overbo is out of England after the match is not commenting anything on the incident as asked by UEFA. Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink tried to question referee’s decision but was of no use. The UEFA spokesman said “We never comment on the performance of the referee.” We all are waiting for a fair decision from UEFA’s general secretary David Taylor as we all believe that the chaotic scenes have disgraced Champions League.

Arsenal won the match against Middlesbrough with a score of 2-0 at the Emirates. They continued to be on 4th position in Premier League table. Lady luck smiled on the center forward player Theo Walcott in seventh minute of the match when he took the Fabregas pass and took it out wide with the help of Robert Huth. The easy 2-0 victory was good enough to boost up the confidence of the team. After few thundering open exchanges, Arsenal Cruise was finally able to score one in the 25th minute.

The ball went from Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin who is in form to Fabregas who further stroked the ball to Nicklas Bendtner. While they were playing with the ball, Arshavin passed it on to Fabregas and he dashed into the net. Bendtner got in between Brad Jones, the Boro keeper, and Fabregas but it was of no use. Replays showed that Boromanager Gareth Southgate was furious after the goal but was helpless.

Before the half hour mark, Bendtner used his upper arm to clear the corner. Gareth Southgate was fuming again when the penalty was shut down. Boro tried to take the stride in second half but Arsenal was still being dominating. The 67th minute of the match saw the second goal from Arsenal. By this time Middlesbrough team was little discouraged but they cannot let the other team augment the goal difference. Their defending became harsher. Brad Jones saved the shots on 72nd and 79th minute from Bendtner and Samir Nasri. With this defeat the chances of Middlesbrough survival seemed slim as they are on 18th position.

Sir Alex Ferguson Expresses anger

alex2Sir Alex Ferguson found himself caught in war of words with Rafael Benitz, the Liverpool manager. He expressed his fury before the semi-final match of FA Cup between Everton and Manchester United. Everton which has won the cup nine times was named a small club by Benitez. Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce also complained against the bad behavior of Rafael Benitz during the 4-0 defeat at Anfield. When Liverpool scored the second goal, Rafael indicated as if the game is over.

Ferguson also did not like the way Benitz dismissed Blackburn when Liverpool gained the second goal against them. He said that Everton is not a small club, it’s a big one. According to Sam Allardyce, the entire gesture was very unfortunate. The war of words took a furious turn when Ferguson said that Arrogance is one thing. You cannot forgive contempt, which is what he showed Sam Allardyce last weekend. To this Allardyce said that the game is hard enough without a fellow manager making an undermining gesture.

“Arrogance is one thing. You cannot forgive contempt, which is what he showed Sam Allardyce last weekend,” Ferguson said. The whole incident appeared rude to Blackburn boss and considered it humiliating and disrespectful. With football being the most prestigious and old game in the continent, such a gesture is a disregard to the honor of game.

UEFA Cup Revival

Now with the Shakhtar Donetsk, Dynamo Kyiv, Hamburg and Werder Bremen entering the semifinals of the UEFA Cup, which will be held in Marseille, is entirely a Ukrainian-German event. UEFA Cup has lost its charm of being a strong marker of Europe’s up-and-coming players. It has now limited itself to mere imitation of its former image. The competition will soon be named Europa league

The fact does not need any more proof that German and Ukrainian Leagues are on top of UEFA cup which is competing with Spanish Liga and English Premiere League. The Aston Villa, Tottenham and Milan did not fare too well at the competition. While the German team needs to strengthen its financial aspect, the Ukraine’s leading clubs face problems of poor administration and corruption besides being neck deep in debt. They have already conquered the problems faced due to winter break extension.

The UEFA Cup should pay attention to above mentioned, otherwise it will become a second rate candidate to Champions League. The competition should relapse into a straight knockout club is the suggestion from Paddy Barclay where 256 clubs from all over the continent can participate. However the suggestion cannot be incorporated as the TV executives who are the sponsors of the competition are not ready for a change.

But there is always a solution to a problem. The UEFA Cup winners can be given a place in Champion’s league so that the clubs participating in the competition play with more seriousness.

Coach Maradona

Diego Maradona has been named the Coach of the Argentinian National Team.  The head coaching spot has long been coveted by Maradona as he has openly expressed interest in the position for a while.  However, there are a lot of people opposing this move.  Lets take a look at Maradona’s experience, the team, and I’ll add my analysis.

Maradona’s Resume

-Player

–1986 World Cup Champion-Captain of Argentina

–FIFA Player of the Century

-Coach

–Mandiyu de Corrientes(Argentina League)

–Racing Club de Avellaneda

His career as a player is not being disputed.  Everyone in the world knows that Diego Maradona, the player, was a force to be reckoned with.  His career as a coach for a mere, two seasons, has been brought up in many arguments though.  In both seasons with two different teams, one team faced regulation and they both had losing records.

The Team

The Argentinian National Team is one of the most powerful teams.  All around the team does not have many holes.  In the back the goalkeeper position is set for at least the next decade if not two.  Roberto Abbondanzieri is getting old but young Oscar Ustari is ready to take over.  I like both keepers and they are some of the best in the world right now.  The defense has three names that come very fast: Heinze, Milito, and Zanetti.  Midfield has Mascherano and Gago.  Forwards: Aguero, Tevez, and Messi, just some to mention.

My Analysis

My feelings on Deigo Maradona are mixed; he was a beautiful player to say the least, but he also had a drug and alcohol problem.  Drug and alcohol problems are not something that I can respect.  However, I think he is making a turn-around in his life and I think he legitimately lives his country and his team.  Having said this, Diego Maradona deserves to be Coach Maradona.  I think his knowledge of the game will contribute to the team.  Also, on a final note, the team is so powerful, nobody could drive it that far off course.

Halloween Week Recap 2:FIFA ‘09

Soccer Central

This last week I recently had the pleasure of playing FIFA 09.  Here is my analysis of the game as well as some new additions they have added.  I played this game on the Xbox 360.

FIFA 09:

The best addition to the game is the “realistic” game play that EA Sports has added.  The players actually do moves like in real life.  I remember the early versions( before 09) would allow a player to run full blast down the line then, cross the ball in the box.  This is obviously unrealistic.

Overall, EA has not added anything else besides making the game play and how we play soccer, more realistic.  The moves are realistic and how we move is added to the game.

My Analysis:

Overall, I think this is a good game.  They have added the realistic part to the game, that I like.  However, I would like to say that besides roster updates, the game did not add anything else.  The “Be The Keeper”, was sadly removed from the game.  Apparently, the Xbox 360 version never had the add-on.  Since I play goal, I was really looking forward to that mode in the future.

Buy this game, but here after, don’t buy this game again.  I don’t see what else they will have to offer besides what they have done already.  I will always buy the latest edition but, keeping economics in mind, the future editions will be a waste of money.

hey jason, nice article, and definitely something to think about. It is true that there is a huge gulf between say club soccer, high school soccer, and college level soccer. You know that I want to play at the NCAA level, but I do understand that, realistically, I'm just not
